In an attempt to communicate the safer Internet message directly to youth, the Swedish Media Council has produced three animated films that will be spread online primarily through social media sites. The films are in English and free to network members to use and distribute. The Eddie films are 30 second-long video clips about Eddie, an impulsive teenage boy who tries out typical online behavior in the physical world. The films aim to spur reflection on why most people act differently online than offline.

Eddie's blog illustrates how easy it is to forget that online publication of texts and photos usually are available to everyone and not only the people they were intended for. In Eddie comments, Eddie gets frustrated with the crowd at the mall and, assuming he can get away with it, he lets some people know how he really feels about them. The film demonstrates that the illusion of anonymity on the Internet sometimes has a negative effect on people’s behavior. Eddie signs up points out that signing up on a social networking site or registering as a user for a service usually entails giving away rights or approving that the information submitted can be used in other contexts. In the end of the films the question “How do you act online?” is posed.

The Swedish Media Council decided to produce the Eddie films knowing that many children and young people name video material as a preferred form of communication, and the scripts were developed in collaboration with the Council’s youth panel. To date, Eddie can be found on the Council’s website, the Council’s Youtube channel (www.youtube.com/medieradet), and on Facebook. Please help spread the films by becoming a friend on Facebook, posting links to the Youtube films or publishing the films yourselves.

If you wish to have the actual files, contact Martina Högberg at the Swedish Media Council at [email protected]. They are available in .wmv, .mov, .3gp, and .m4v formats in English and Swedish. Please also note that TV rights can be attained at cost.
